Velcro (also known as a hook and loop fastener) is a fastening system consisting of a piece of fabric of small hooks that sticks to a corresponding fabric of small loops. It produces a distinctive ripping sound when separating the two pieces.

Due to its ease of use compared to alternative fastening systems like buttons and zippers, it is a common feature for clothing for children, elderly, and the disabled who may have difficulty with laces, buttons, and zippers.

Due to the prominence of the Velcro Brand, hook-and-loop fasteners are often referred to by the genericized trademark velcro in English. Compare to adhesive bandage → bandaid.
