scissor doors

An uncommon type of door mounting most often found on customized automobiles. Whereas most factory hinges on modern cars cause the doors to open sideways/forward on the same horizontal plane, scissor doors open upward/forward.

See Wikipedia entries on Lamborghini Countach [1], Diablo [2] and Murcielago [3] for famous examples of scissor doors. Lamborghini was such a prolific user of this joint on its most dramatic cars that initially, scissor doors were also known as "Lambo doors."

Not to be confused with gullwing doors, which are hinged at the roof and open sideways/upward. See Mercedes 300SL [4] and DeLorean DMC-12 [5].
