Avatars are used in World Tour, beginning as a new member of the Buckler Training Center (with Luke as your initial master) before going out into the world to become a World Warrior, as well as the Battle Hub, where you can interact with fellow Avatars in the same server, and enabling you to fight others using the skills acquired in World Tour.

A common promotional depiction of the player avatar is one of the black presets. This preset has been nicknamed "John Streetfighter/World Tour" by the fandom.
