phalanx (destroid)

A mecha from the MACROSS series. It first appeared in the Choujikuu Yousai Macross TV anime science fiction series from 1982.

The SDR-04-Mk XII Phalanx Space Defense Robot destroid is a main battle robot system (mecha) created by the U.N. Spacy to fight the Zentradi. It was the final destroid developed during Space War I and it was designed to act as a fleet defense mecha.

Armed with dozens of missiles in two large cylindrical launchers, the Phalanx made an excellent semi-mobile missile based battery. Some variants also featured defensive armaments such as a head mounted gatling gun.

During the last battles of Space War I against the Zentradi alien fleets, the Phalanx units were repainted and refitted to fire long-range "reaction" (nuclear) warheads for use against the enemy alien space warships.

In real life the Phalanx was designed by Miyatake Kazutaka in the early 80s.
