kebiishi
検非違使 (kebiishi, also read as kenbi-ishi) are police and judicial officials in Heian (and Kamakura) periods. The police investigator who appeared in Akutagawa Ryuunosuke's ”In a Grove/Yabu no Naka” was a kebiishi.
