A piece of laboratory equipment that produces a single open gas flame, which is used for heating, sterilization, and combustion.
The standard device, such as those used in a laboratory, use an external source of fuel, commonly methane, which is connected to the burner by a rubber hose. There are portable types that use small canisters of gas, commonly butane, directly connected to the device.
