A picture hat is an elaborate woman's hat with a wide brim, worn with gown or in formal clothes settings. This style of hat was featured in virtually every decade of the 20th century and has a history dating back to at least the 18th century, as shown in pictures by 18th-century English painters such as Reynolds and Gainsborough.
