Son of an earlier Hydarnes who helped Darius the Great overthrow the usurper Gaumata/Bardiya, he led the elite Persian Immortals at the Battle of Thermopylae. They initially struggled against Leonidas's line defending the pass but after being informed of a secret path by a Greek traitor the Persian forces flanked the Spartans through that path, thus winning the battle for the Persians.
