Named for Caernarfon Castle (Welsh: Castell Caernarfon), also anglicized as Carnarvon Castle, located in Caernarfon, Gwynedd, northwest Wales. There was a motte-and-bailey castle in the town from the late 11th century until 1283 when King Edward I of England (reigned 1272-1307) began replacing it with the current stone structure. It was used for the investiture of the Prince of Wales in 1911 (Edward, later Edward VIII, son of George V) and 1969 (Charles, son of Elizabeth II).
